Volunteering/Interning at Lubee Bat Conservancy

Volunteer/Intern Application Form | Internship/Volunteer Job Description

Bats are listed as a rabies vector species in the United States, and volunteers working at the Lubee Bat Conservancy will have separate jobs based on whether they have been vaccinated for rabies or not. Lubee asks volunteers to work a minimum of 16 hours per month, and accepts volunteers every day of the week.

Volunteering / Interning at Lubee Bat Conservancy

  • Volunteers that have not been vaccinated for rabies
You can still volunteer at Lubee, and work preparing diets and enrichment, work in our browse garden, assist the curator with preparing educational items, or assist the maintenance department with facilities maintenance. You can also assist the keeping staff when they are feeding the collection in the afternoon.
  • Volunteers that have been vaccinated for rabies
If you have been vaccinated for rabies or have a current rabies titer then you will be able to work alongside the keeping staff at Lubee and go into the enclosures to take care of the bats in addition to the tasks described above.

If you are interested in being vaccinated for rabies, the Alachua County Health Department does have a vaccination program. The initial series involves three intramuscular vaccinations, and each shot is $204.00. You may also want to check with your health provider, since they may cover this cost if you are working with a rabies-vector species.
